Cybercrime Alert

Announcements & Updates

Recently, we have received reports of convincing attempts to scam members of our community, including family members of students, by individuals posing as faculty or employees. These criminals use email, text messages, or even direct phone calls to contact potential victims.

Never give personal information to someone who contacts you, especially if the call generates a sense of urgency or stress. Do not deposit money or purchase items for anyone. If you have questions, find the legitimate phone number or email address for the organization the caller claims to represent and contact them directly. You can find legitimate email addresses and phone numbers on the organization’s website or, if it is a bank, on the back of your credit card.

If you have questions, please contact the ITS Service Desk at servicedesk@denison.edu or 740-587-6395.

If you believe you have been the victim of a cybercrime on campus, call the Office of Campus Safety at 740-587-0810 or your local police department if off campus. You can also file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FTC also has helpful guidance on how to avoid a scam, what to do if you were scammed, and reporting fraud to the FTC.
