2022 Campus Improvements

Announcements & Updates

As our crews can attest, it’s been a productive summer for construction on The Hill. From the completion of the Hoaglin Wellness Center to the launch of the Beth Eden renovation and plenty of major and minor improvements in between, you’ll notice some significant upgrades as you return to campus for the 2022-23 year.

Here are updates on projects that took place over the last few months, along with some noteworthy improvements in community safety and parking and traffic regulations.

Construction

Ann and Thomas Hoaglin Wellness Center: The new 15,750 square-foot Hoaglin Wellness Center provides a beautiful wellness environment for medical and counseling services and wellness programming (and construction was completed in just 16 months). Please join us for the grand opening on Monday, Aug. 29, at 4:30 p.m.!

Beth Eden: The renovated Beth Eden building will house the Offices of the President, Provost, General Counsel, Finance and Management, and Registrar. The project includes the addition of ~8,000 square feet and a complete renovation of the historic portion that faces Chapel Walk. Construction is expected to be completed in June 2023.

Gilpatrick House: The Spiritual Life Center has been relocated to Gilpatrick House, placing it adjacent to Swasey Chapel and Hoaglin Wellness Center. Gilpatrick renovations include new exterior paint, roof, gutters, flooring, interior paint, kitchen upgrades, restroom upgrades, light fixtures, and demolition/reconfiguration of walls to create an open concept.

Talbot Hall: HVAC control systems have been replaced in Talbot Hall, improving reliability and energy efficiency. We replaced all supply and exhaust valves and migrated equipment to the current software. We will install greenhouse control upgrades in summer 2023.

New Heating Plant: A new heating plant with higher efficiencies will replace the existing plant located at the opposite end of the Village of Granville. Construction of the plant, located behind Mitchell Center, is projected to be completed prior to the 2022-2023 heating season. The new plant will improve operations on several fronts and is approximately 10% more efficient than the current facility.

President’s Drive: We removed failing concrete on President’s Drive and replaced it with new concrete.

Community Safety & Parking

Campus Parking: Campus Safety utilized community feedback to improve the process and procedures around parking on campus. Updates include:

  • Updated parking information and campus parking map are available here.
  • Campus Safety has improved the citation appeals process and established a Parking Appeals Board composed of faculty, staff, and students, to help adjudicate student parking citations.

A few reminders:

  • In Granville, texting and driving is illegal
  • The speed limit on campus streets is 20 mph
  • Pedestrians have the right of way
  • Parking Garage: Beginning Aug. 29, the gate will be down from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m., and a 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### ID will be required. The speed limit is 10 mph. After 4 p.m., the gate is up and ID is not required for entry
  • Doane: Parking behind Doane Administration is limited to visitors or employees picking up or dropping off packages

Additionally, new safety features include car license plate readers (LPR) at the campus entrance gates. The LPRs are a valuable investigative tool for incidents such as the theft of catalytic converters we experienced last year.

Residential Housing

Access Control: This summer, efforts continued on a project to install card access control on all residence hall doors. Upgraded buildings include Shepardson Hall (with appropriate new wooden doors), Huffman Hall (with appropriate new wooden doors), Taylor Hall, and East Hall.

Several residential halls were renovated this summer in accordance with the campus master plan.

Kappa Sigma: Renovation improvements include new flooring, lounge and room furniture, lighting, kitchen upgrades, and paint on the upper two floors.

Morrow House: Renovation improvements include new flooring, lounge and room furniture, lighting, paint, roofing, kitchen upgrades, masonry repairs, new boilers, and exterior concrete.

Shepardson Hall: Improvements repurposed an unused lounge on the ground floor to create three two-person residence rooms and a new ADA-compliant restroom.

Sunset House: A new fire protection sprinkler system was designed and installed.

Athletics Facilities

Deeds Field Piper Stadium: In response to some deterioration of concrete on the home side bleachers, all bleachers and supports were removed, and the failing concrete was demolished. These areas were patched and refinished, and the bleachers/supports were reinstalled this summer. Barclay Thompson Field: New LED lights and a scoreboard at Barclay Thompson Field were installed this summer.
