Martha Nussbaum’s work on human capabilities has contributed substantially to development work internationally and to political theory globally. Nussbaum employs a concept of wonder to explain why a similar concern for human capabilities ought to extend to the capabilities of other living beings. In this talk, Bendik-Keymer argues that wonder is helpful for opening up consideration of each other’s lives in democracy. Consideration of other kinds of lives and consideration of each other’s lives are therefore intertwined.

Jeremy Bendik-Keymer is Elmer G. Beamer-Hubert H. Schneider Professor in Ethics and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Case Western Reserve University.
