On October 23rd, 2018 Dr. Meredith Gadsby, a notable writer and professor, visited 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 #########’s campus to engage with students and faculty. Held in Knapp 201 and co-sponsored by Anthropology Sociology department, The Journalism department, the Center for Black Studies and the Women’s and Gender Studies Laura C. Harris Symposium, Dr. Gadsby and 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### community members discussed her book Sucking Salt: Caribbean Women Writers, Migration, and Survival over lunch.
Dr. Gadsby is an assistant professor of Africana Studies and Comparative Studies at Oberlin 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址, and president of the Association of Caribbean Women Writers. The stories she heard her mother and aunt tell as she was growing up enabled her to write about the lived experiences of Caribbean women. During her visit, she discussed the idea of “sucking salt” as folk language to convey a survival strategy. Throughout her book, she grapples with the material and metaphorical experience of salt and its versatility in Caribbean culture. Overall, she describes the invisibility of Afro-Caribbean women in academia and highlights their narratives as those worthy of being explored from multiple discursive frameworks.
