Ladysmith Black Mambazo Lunches with Black Studies Students

Visiting Artists

Students and members of Tehillah an Afrocentric acapella group and members of the Black Studies Committee attended a luncheon with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, on Tuesday, February 13th, at 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 #########’s Sigma Chi House.

The lunch took place on the eve of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Vail Series Performance held Wednesday in Swasey Chapel, Feb 14 at 7:00 p.m. where audiences were captivated by the Grammy-nominated group’s animated performance of historic work songs and songs of spiritual uplift. Originating in the 1960’s, this group was introduced to the U.S. music scene by activist and folk music legend Paul Simon when he featured them on his 1986 album—Graceland. From there the group went on to work with stars such as Stevie Wonder and Dolly Parton and was featured on soundtracks for Disney’s The Lion King and many others.

The luncheon was delightful as students and faculty engaged the members of this choral group about their lives, experiences on tour, and their journeys as musicians in such a longstanding group. Pictured here are Black Studies students and members of Tehillah with members of Ladysmith after they bonded over lunch. Afterward, Ladysmith members were guest speakers in a combined session of two Black Studies classes: Contemporary African Peoples in Historical Perspective (Susan Diduk) and Postcolonial African Literature (Diana Mafe).
