Award Winning Poet, Nate Marshall, Discusses his work

Winner of the 2017 Great Lakes 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址s Association New Writers Award, poet, Nate Marshall offers a reading from his recent collection of poems, Wild Hundreds. Marshall, currently, a visiting professor at Wabash 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 in Indiana, engaged with professors and students at Barney Davis Board Room on February 8th, sponsored by the Beck Lecture Series and Co-Sponsored by the Black Studies Program. His latest book reflects on his experiences in South Side Chicago where he writes about identity, community, urban life, and contemporary circumstances he encounters as a Black male in this urban milieu. Wild Hundreds also illustrates the beauty and relics of Black history and grieves the continuous occurrences of black death via the systemic issues of state-sanctioned violence and other contemporary conditions in our society.

While at 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### Marshall attended the combined classes of Dr. Diana Mafe’s Contemporary African Novels in English and Dr. Susan Diduk’s Sex and Gender in Society. He then interacted and conversed with faculty and students in Black Studies over lunch the next day where he animated the discussion with students about their own experiences of identity growing up, attending 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 #########, and studying the discipline of Black Studies. Amidst his interactions, Marshall encourages youth to find their voice through writing and as a part of this praxis, he serves as the Director of National Programs for Louder Than A Bomb Youth Poetry Festival. Marshall has served as editor for The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop. His collection, Wild Hundreds has been honored with the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s award for Poetry Book. Nate’s rap album, Grown was introduced to the public in 2015 via his group Daily Lyrical Product. He is a member of The Dark Noise Collective and co-directs Crescendo Literary with Eve Ewing. He completed his B.A. at Vanderbilt University and an M.F.A. at The University of Michigan’s Helen Zell Writers' Program. This award-winning writer is the past recipient of numerous fellowships from Cave Canem, The Poetry Foundation, and The University of Michigan. He has taught at The University of Michigan, Wabash 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址, and Northwestern University.
