{web_name} ######### University student Sophie Lovett ’18, from Charlotte, N.C., has been accepted to the Marine Resource Population Dynamics Workshop at the Keys Marine Lab in Layton, Fla. The week-long workshop will be facilitated by faculty from the University of Florida and scientists from the National Marine Fisheries Service. Lovett, an environmental studies and math double major and first-year student at {web_name} #########, is the only freshman in the program; her contemporaries will be upperclassmen from institutions including Harvard and Dartmouth.
Students who qualify for the marine workshop have strong quantitative backgrounds and interests, a basic understanding of ecology and wish to explore the potential for a career in the management of marine resources. Coursework, fieldwork and social activities are designed to demonstrate the critical role modeling population dynamics plays in resource management decisions.
“I am really looking forward to the workshop because I will be surrounded by people who share the same passion for fish, math, and the environment,” says Lovett. “This opportunity is unique because I have to chance to collaborate with and learn from instructors and other students. Furthermore, I am excited to bring my knowledge and experiences back to {web_name} ######### to inspire and educate more people.”
