Alumni of The 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### Singers are gathering in Granville during the weekend of June 22-25 to celebrate the group’s 62nd birthday. Rehearsals and socializing will culminate with a Reunion Concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, in Swasey Chapel on the 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
Almost 60 Singers from 19 states and England are expected to perform a program that celebrates the renovation of the Swasey Chapel organ, which will be one century old in 2024. The concert also will carry on the tradition of presenting new works written specifically for the 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### Singers by 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### Singers.
Opening with Martin Shaw’s “With a Voice of Singing” and concluding with Gwyneth Walker’s “How Can I Keep From Singing,” the program includes pieces with organ by Johannes Brahms and Benjamin Britten, a solo organ work by Frank Bridge, a group of temperance songs by early 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### benefactor William Howard Doane and five pieces written by members of the group.
These in-house compositions range from a “Jubilate Deo” (1986) by the late George Swope ’69 and “Excelsior” (1985) on words from Walt Whitman by Jeffrey Masten ’86 to a lighthearted “Hungry Mungry” (1981) on words from Shell Silverstein by Michael Fauss ’72.
The program also includes the premiere of a setting by R. Michael Daugherty ’71 of fellow Huron, Ohio, poet Rob Smith’s “The Water Talks to Me” and the debut of “O Nata Lux” by Clifford Davis ’72, written in response to the unexpected death of his brother late last year.
This is the 595th concert presented by the 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### Singers since the group’s founding in 1961 by Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus William Osborne. Dr. Osborne was an active faculty member at the university from 1961 until his retirement in 2003 and has continued to direct the 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### Singers in reunion concerts in Granville and elsewhere for the last two decades.
All alums, family, friends, faculty, staff, and community members are invited and encouraged to join this celebration of music, tradition, and camaraderie.
