必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 ######### University’s Department of Philosophy and the Titus-Hepp Lecture Series welcomes Professor of Philosophy at John Jay 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 of Criminal Justice Jonathan Jacobs, presenting, “Agency, Punishment, and the Liberal State.”

In a liberal state (such as the United States or United Kingdom) there are important relations between the political/legal order and civil society; each can reinforce (or weaken) the other. Current practices and policies of incarceration in the United States and United Kingdom diminish offenders as agents in ways that diminish the civility of society and weaken the political legal order. The diminution of agency is a centrally important issue in several respects. How can it be addressed from within the values and principles of the liberal state? 

Jacobs is a Presidential Scholar, and Director of the Institute for Criminal Justice Ethics at John Jay 必博娱乐,比博娱乐网址 of Criminal Justice, and member of the doctoral faculties of Philosophy and Criminal Justice at the City University of New York Graduate Center.
