Ubuntu Campus Organization of the Year

This award goes to a student organization that has exemplified the values of Ubuntu by fostering unity, culture, and inclusion on campus. AfroSpice has gone above and beyond in creating a welcoming space where students celebrate and share the beauty of the African diaspora through dance, music, and community engagement. They showed up in a big way this year, including being the only student leaders to facilitate a workshop during the campuswide MLK Day celebration, opening for the biannual Step Afrika production here on campus, and maintaining a strong and active membership that shows up over and over again in many of our campus traditions.

This award recognizes a program that has made a significant impact in promoting cross-cultural understanding and community engagement.

Ubuntu Educational Event of the Year

Education is a powerful tool in building bridges and fostering change. This year, two organizations have earned this award for their impactful Day of Dead ofrendas around campus, including one in the library, one in the Gilpatrick house, one in the La Fuerza Space, and one in The Center for Belonging and Inclusion.

Events are the heart of campus life, bringing students together around shared passions and values. This year, we are proud to recognize four outstanding organizations that collaborated for a very special event known as The Bundle-Up Initiative. This event provided clothing to students with financial restraints who were in need of basic necessities during the winter season.

The Ubuntu Person of the Year award honors an individual who exemplifies the values of Ubuntu in their daily life—through leadership, service, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of others. This year’s recipient has gone above and beyond to foster a sense of belonging, uplift their peers, and inspire change.

The Resident of the Year Award is given to students who are outstanding members of their residential community and embody the Residential Communities & Housing values of personal growth, diverse perspectives, and belonging.

This award recognizes the work of one Community Advisor who has gone above and beyond their role during the Academic Year. Community Advisors are guides, advocates, friendship builders, connectors, partners, and more. Throughout the year, we have been recognizing CAs of the Month, honoring our outstanding staff members during our regular training times. The nominees for today’s award have been pulled from these individuals.

Bridge Builder of the Year

The Spiritual Life Center’s Bridge Builder Award recognizes a student or students that work to increase understanding between religions, spiritualities or secular value systems. Recipients are recognized for:

  • Willingness to share their own beliefs, value system, religious tradition or secular worldview
  • Creating opportunities for student engagement (experiences or dialogue) across traditions or belief systems
  • Advocating for interfaith awareness
  • Collaboration with multiple partners across campus
