Sarah Schubert '21 awarded Fulbright

Sarah Schubert graduated from ±Ø²©ÓéÀÖ,±È²©ÓéÀÖÍøÖ· ######### magna cum laude in 2021 with a double major in international studies and Spanish. As a Fulbright grantee, Sarah Schubert ¡®21 will serve as an English teaching assistant and cultural ambassador in Mexico.

Having grown up in Louisville, Kentucky, Sarah explains that she initially had little exposure to Latin American culture. After watching a documentary about immigrants traveling through Mexico atop a train, Sarah set out to study Mexico¡¯s history and relationship with the United States. These interests led Sarah to intern with the Backside Learning Center, a non-profit organization serving equine workers and their families at the Churchill Downs racetrack.

A Gilman Scholar, Sarah studied abroad at the School for International Training in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At ±Ø²©ÓéÀÖ,±È²©ÓéÀÖÍøÖ· #########, Sarah was involved with the ±Ø²©ÓéÀÖ,±È²©ÓéÀÖÍøÖ· ######### Community Association, serving as President her senior year, and was inducted into both Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board honoraries.

¡°I believe my lived experiences in Mexico will give me personal, unique, and invaluable insights by immersing myself in a culture different from my own,¡± says Sarah as she looks forward to her Fulbright year abroad.

Sarah is one of five ±Ø²©ÓéÀÖ,±È²©ÓéÀÖÍøÖ· #########ians who were offered prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Grants for the 2022-2023 academic year. Funded by the U.S. Department of State¡¯s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Fulbright grants foster mutual cross-cultural understanding as awardees spend a post-graduate academic year teaching English, conducting research, or studying at a university in one of over 140 participating countries. Fulbright grants are awarded on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as awardees¡¯ record of service and leadership potential in their respective fields.
